Although in the State of Mississippi, Natchez is only about 70 miles from Alexandria, and just across the river from Ferriday and Vidalia in Louisiana. We've traveled through Natchez, and visited there often.
Natchez was founded in 1716 by French Colonists, and has a rich history along the Mississippi River. Today it is the county seat of Adams County.
It is the home of a number of nationally known plantations such as Dunleith, Oakland Plantation, Monmouth Plantation, Stanton Hall and others. I clearly remember standing on the porch of the majestic Stanton Hall in 1960 and marveling at the history around me!
Natchez offers a variety of accomodations for tourists and visitors including numerous B&Bs, the historic Eola Hotel and other motels and hotels.
It is also the location of a successful gaming and casino industry, and a major tourist destination.
We've made the trip down The Great River Road, U.S. Highway 61, to St. Francisville, and also north on 61 to Vicksburg, several times, and love the greeen, rolling hills along the way: a highly recommended route!
Shown below are a few images of the past from Natchez plantations and tourist accomodations...
